I developed the story map for the project, as well as diagrams and visualizations for presentation.
This page presents a Story Map of women’s embodied geographies of resistance to violence in Maré, a group of favelas in Rio de Janeiro marked by persistent urban conflict and a potent community history led by women. Through a multi-method framework, the Story Map explores women's spatialized and embodied experiences resisting and combating various forms of intersectional gendered urban violence. It highlights women’s knowledge of the territory regarding armed violence, lack of safety, feminist potencia/power and formal and informal networks of support.
This Story Map results from a co-created collaborative international research project entitled “Resisting Violence, Creating Dignity: negotiating Violence Against Women and Girls through community history-making in Rio de Janeiro ” . It brought together key partners in the UK (King’s College London, People's Palace Projects, Queen Mary University of London) and in Brazil ( Redes da Maré , Casa das Mulheres da Maré ) and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
Conducted in 2019-2022, the project aimed to explore how women resist gender-based violence and create dignity through community history-making in Maré. It acknowledges that women are protagonists in building their pathways to resistance and dignity, individually and collectively. It also acknowledges women’s role in Maré’s community history, at the frontline of important struggles for social rights and urban justice.
